This just in as far as we can tell: iRiver has announced a new MKV-supporting touchscreen PMP. Dubbed the iRiver Smart HD, it’s a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 multitouch-(yes, multitouch-) screen with MKV HD video support. This PMP was previously announced as iRiver K1 last year but apparently iRiver has bigger plans for it.

We’re not sure if it supports 720p or full 1080p videos, but we can assume it will be one of the most usable (and reliable) HD PMPs in the market. Another good thing about the iRiver Smart HD is that it will be available with plenty of options including a 16GB version with everything on it (WiFi and DMB TV) that will sell for about $310 USD.

File support: MKV, AVI, WMV, MP4, TP, MPG, ASF, MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, WAV, AC3, xt, DOC, XLS, PPT, PDF, HWP,  HTML, HTM, MHTML, JPEG, BMP, PNG, GIF, RAW.

Obviously, iRiver intends the Smart HD to be your all-purpose PMP with not only great video and music support but supporting all manner of text files as well (read: Kindle killer?). Prices after the break.
